<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyphenylene sulfone fiber having high heat resistance and high proton exchange capacity. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The polyphenylene sulfone fiber is produced by circulating a liquid current while dropping an oxidant such as hydrogen peroxide while keeping a state of a polyphenylene sulfide fiber soaked in a solvent obtained by adding a sulfuric acid catalyst to a carboxylic acid to advance the reaction. As a result, the sulfonic acid group is bonded to the phenyl group of the phenylene sulfone structure to form a crosslinked structure of the phenyl groups to each other.
