PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing apparatus and method capable of reducing the power consumption by emitting light according to the drive mode at the focus control while precisely sensing the focusing position. SOLUTION: The photographing apparatus includes a focus lens 104 capable of focusing a subject image on an imaging face, a focusing position sensing part 125 for sensing the focusing position of the focus lens at the focusing at least one main subject image out of subject images on the imaging face, a focus control part 125 for controlling a first drive of the focus lens and a second drive of the focus lens different from the first drive, and light emission control parts 126, 128 for controlling light emission of a light emitting part for emitting a light to a subject differently in the case of the first drive and the second drive.
