<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for quickly calculating an optimum value for the set item of a control item having a time lag element among ECU control items. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An optimum value searching device 10 measures a measurement item at an initial value of the set item when ECU control is performed, continuously measures measurement items while sweeping the set item, calculates a quadratic curve fit for variation of a series of measured values in the measurement at the initial and the measurements with sweeping, calculates an intersection between a straight line having an inclination equal to the maximum value of inclinations of the calculated quadratic curve and an intercept equal to the measured value at the initial value and a predetermined limit value of the measurement item of the ECU control, and estimates a threshold value at the calculated intersection.
