The device has switch elements (5-7) e.g. relays, assigned to battery modules (2-4) of a battery unit (1) for balancing different charging conditions of the modules, which are electrically connected with each other in parallel to form a parallel circuit. The modules include multiple battery cells arranged in series relative to each other. An operating condition of the battery unit and the charging condition of each module are determined. One of the modules with a high charging condition is transiently separated from the circuit for balancing in a charging condition of the battery unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a battery unit including battery modules for a motor vehicle.
