<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a software updating system capable of the proper settings required for software updates. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The software updating system includes a client 1 which issues a request for update data for the update of current software, and a software update management server 2 which, in response to the request for the update data via a network 100, returns the update data requested. The client 1 requests the update data while adding current software specification information, current setting information and the like, and updates and sets software based on the update data. The software update management server 2 can collect new software, new setting information and the like, and in response to the request for the update data determines whether or not the update of settings is necessary according to the current setting information and new setting information; if determining that the update is not necessary, the server at least collects the new software as the update data; if determining that the update is necessary, the server at least collects the new software and the new setting information as the update data.
