Use of a substance of formula (I) wherein -R1, R2, R3 and R4 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen (-H), methyl (-CH3), ethyl (-CH2CH3), C3 alkyl, C4 alkyl, C5 alkyl and C6 alkyl, and -X and Y are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen (-H), methyl (-CH3), ethyl (-CH2CH3), C3 alkyl, C4 alkyl, C5 alkyl and C6 alkyl, halogen, nitro (-NO2), hydroxy (-OH), methoxy (-OCH3), ethoxy (-OCH2CH3), C3 alkoxy, C4 alkoxy, C5 alkoxy and C6 alkoxy, phenyl (-C6H5), benzyl (-CH2C6H5), and benzyloxy (-OCH2C6H5), (a) for the manufacture of cosmetic compositions and/or topical compositions and/or (b) in cosmetic compositions and/or topical compositions for (i) the lightening of the skin and/or (ii) the whitening of the skin and/or (iii) the reduction of pigmentation of the skin and/or (iv) the reduction of hyperpigmentation of the skin and/or (v) the inhibition of melanogenesis in the skin and/or (vi) the prevention and/or retardation of signs of ageing and/or improving the skin appearance of an aged skin.
