<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently clean toner on a conveying belt. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes a control means that controls operations of a transfer roller 4, photosensitive drums 6 and the conveying belt 12. An electric field, which is controlled by the control means, is formed at a nip part between the photosensitive drum 6 and the transfer roller 4 when toner on the conveying belt 12 is transferred to the plurality of photosensitive drums 6, the direction of the electric field is reversed at a predetermined cycle to a first direction toward the photoresensitive drum 6 from the conveying belt 12 or to a second direction toward the conveying belt 12 from the photosensitive drum 6, and the electric field exceeds discharge generation electric field strength when the electric field is directed to at least one of the first and second directions.
