<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized material testing machine having a lighter weight than a conventional testing machine, capable of changing easily an installation position, and usable by changing an installation direction simply both longitudinally and horizontally. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An air cylinder 2 placed under servo control is used as an actuator of a load mechanism, and installation elements 30, 50, 51, 100 for installing the testing machine respectively are provided on at least three surfaces in total, of two surfaces (one surface of a flat plate 3b and one surface of a cross yoke 5) on both ends in the driving direction of the air cylinder and at least one surface connecting both ends, and an optional surface between each surface is constituted selectably as an installation surface of the testing machine. Consequently, a longitudinal state, an inverted state and a horizontal state can be changed simply, and the installation direction can be changed freely according to the form of an apparatus for observing a test piece in the test state, or the like.
