The nanoparticle includes a plurality of platinum atoms and a plurality of atoms from a stabilizing metal. The platinum atoms form a plurality of terraces on the nanoparticle. The plurality of atoms from a stabilizing metal are located at edge regions and corner regions. The stabilizing metal includes at least one of zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten.
