<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surroundings monitoring device that more efficiently and effectively detects surrounding obstacles by use of images captured by a camera. Ž<P>SOLUTION: If a driver of a vehicle 300 gazes the right or left direction (a), a portion 302 of an image 310 captured by a forward camera 1, which is opposite to the gazing direction, is extracted as an image 320 to be detected (b).
