The device has a controller connected to a brightness sensor. The controller compares sensor values with upper and lower threshold values. The controller includes a counter, which is incremented when the upper threshold value is exceeded. The controller generates a control signal for switching off a high beam headlight, when a level of the counter and/or another counter exceeds a predetermined value. The controller generates another control signal for switching on the high beam headlight, when the lower threshold value is permanently fallen below a preset value during a predetermined period. An independent claim is also included for a method for switching on and off of a high beam headlight depending on two-way traffic.
