<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retractable applicator which is of a comparatively simpler and sturdy construction and enables its lid to be reliably opened during pushing out a writing element, and besides, its opening to be surely sealed during retracting the writing element. <P>SOLUTION: This retractable applicator functions as follows: When a shaft-like application element 12 moves forward, an inclined part 20 pushes the protrusion 22 of the lid 16 and thereby, drives the lid 16 in the open direction of an apex opening 10a of a barrel 10, against the elastic force of an elastic material 26. Thus, an application part 14 is set to a position exposed to the opening 10a, and on the other hand, when retreating the shaft-like application element 12, the pushing force of the protrusion 22 by the inclined part 20 is released, and thereby, the lid 16 is set back in the closing direction of the opening 10a by the elastic force of the elastic material 26.
