PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium achieving both high magnetic permeability and antiferromagnetic coupling of a soft magnetic underlayer. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is formed by layering at least a soft magnetic underlayer, which is formed by antiferromagnetic coupling of multiple soft magnetic layers, on a nonmagnetic substrate together with a vertical magnetic layer, the axis of easy magnetization of which is primarily oriented perpendicularly to the nonmagnetic substrate. The soft magnetic layers of the magnetic recording medium contain Fe as a first primary component, Co as a second primary component, and Ta in addition. The soft magnetic underlayer is antiferromagnetically coupled using the second or a subsequently appearing peak of the antiferromagnetic coupling force that changes according to the thicknesses of spacer layers sandwiched between the multiple magnetic layers, and the magnetic permeability of the underlayer is 1,000 H/m or greater.
