<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel economy by further reducing a capacity coefficient during idle rotation in a torque converter provided with a stator brake. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A torque converter consists of a front cover 4, an impeller 5, a turbine 6, a stator 7 and a stator brake 8. The stator 7 includes a plurality of first stator blades 31a which are arranged side by side in a rotating direction and a plurality of second stator blades 31b which are arranged between the plurality of first stator blades 31a and are shorter than the axial length of each first stator blade 31a.
