PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a throw-away chip for grooving work, capable of improving abrasion resistance of a cutting edge without degrading chipping resistance. SOLUTION: The throw-away chip 1 includes a substantially rectangular parallelopiped chip body 2, a rake face 3 formed on an edge top face of the chip body 2, and a forefront cutting edge 4 of and side cutting edges 5 provided on the forefront and both edges of the cutting face 3, respectively. Besides, a rake angleα<SB>1</SB>at a corner 4a of the forefront cutting edge 4 is made smaller than a rake angleα<SB>2</SB>at a central part 4b of the forefront cutting edge 4, and a straight part 9 perpendicular to the seating surface 8 is formed on a flank 7 side of the central part 4b of the forefront cutting edge 4. The corner 4a of the forefront cutting edge 4 has no straight part 9 or a straight part having a length shorter than that of the straight part 9 at the central part 4b, and at least the forefront cutting edge 4a is covered with a covering layer 10.
