Catalysts for polymerizing olefins consist of a mixture of at least one member from each group: (a) a tri- or tetra-halide of titanium, zirconium, hafnium; (b) a hydride of sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium, magnesium, calcium, barium, strontium, lanthanum and thorium. Reaction conditions include: diluents, nitrogen atmosphere, pressures from 100 to 750 p.s.i.g. and temperatures from 200 DEG to 400 DEG F. The metallic halides include all the halogens; mixtures of such compounds may be used. As diluents, paraffinic hydrocarbons are preferred, but halogenated paraffins, cycloparaffins, and aromatics may be used. The olefines polymerized are 1-olefines up to 8 C. atoms, branched-chain olefines, di-alkyl substituted ethylenes, di- and poly-olefines with nonconjugated linkages, cyclic olefines, and aryl olefines. Mixtures to produce copolymers are also referred to.ALSO:Olefines are polymerized with a catalyst consisting of a mixture of at least one member from each group (a) tri- or tetra-halides of zirconium, titanium, and hafnium; (b) a hydride of sodium, potassium, caesium, rubidium, magnesium, calcium, barium, strontium, lanthanum, and thorium.
