Base or noble metals are electro-plated with Pt or Pd using an electrolyte containing a platino-nitrite complex of formula where R is chloride, perchlorate, sulphate, sulphamate, oxalate, or hydroxide, and Na may be replaced by K, alkaline earth metal, ammonia or hydrogen. In examples, 5 to 20 g. per litre of or the sulphate H2Pt(NO2)2SO4 and corresponding Pd. compounds are used. As base metal there may be plated Ag, Au, Cu, Ni, Pb and Ti, and after an undercoat of silver or nickel also Fe, Zn, Sn and Cd. The Provisional Specification also refers to the use of ruthenium and rhodium platino-nitrite complexes. This subject matter does not appear in the Complete Specification. |
