A mat through which liquid to be filtered is passed comprises a layer of fibrous material preceding an adjacent self-supporting sheet of non-fibrous material. These may be united to form a composite sheet. A layer 1 of cellulose and asbestos fibres is attached by adhesive along its edges to a porous sheet 4 of a synthetic plastic such as that described in Specification 565,022 [Group IV] or one sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Porvic ". The composite sheet may be apertured as at 2, the non-fibrous sheet 4 being flanged over as at 6 into the aperture and overlapped by a flanged liner 7 of the same material.
