Improvements in or relating to paper and fabric reenforcing machines

Reinforced paper; compound paper. -A machine for reinforcing paper or other fabric with straightened unspun fibres applied transversely comprises combs of teeth 29 which carry the fibre over a continuously fed web of adhesive coated paper or fabric the combs being provided with locking nuts 52, Fig. 11, to hold the fibres on the teeth and with doffing bars 54 for releasing the fibres and allowing them to fall on the paper or the like. The fibres are delivered from the attenuating machine by combs 48, Fig. 8, between rollers 30, 31 and are carried by a belt 38 beneath the combs on to which they are pushed by a roller 50. A drum 77 is spaced to allow entry of the comb teeth and provided with fixed blades 78 and movable blades 79 each blade having tapered cutting fingers. These movable blades by longitudinal movement for the distance between one cutting finger and the next effect the cutting of the fibres. The provision of the three sets of blades 78, 79 on the periphery of the roller 77 makes possible an easy adjustment of the cutting to suit different widths of paper which may be passed through the machine. The combs 29 are mounted on bars 26, Fig. 11, connected to endless chains 17 by which they are driven by a toothed wheel 127 and on these bars are mounted the mechanisms for locking the fibres and for doffing, alternate mechanisms being mounted at opposite sides of the machine. The ends of the bars 26 are provided with rollers 21 which travel in supporting and guiding grooves 23 and the locking is effected by cams 137, Fig. 6, engaging rollers 65 mounted on sliders 62 to operate bell-crank levers 56 to produce a sliding movement of the blades 52. Doffing rollers 107 are provided with blades 108 which by engagement of the rollers 65 move the sliders 62 outwards to doff the cut-off sheet of fibres when over the paper web. The rollers 107 are provided with extensions 107, 107, by which they may be adapted to the different widths of paper to be coated. Change gears are provided for adjusting the speed of the chains 17, the cutters 79 &c. to the different widths of paper. Longitudinally laid fibres and a covering layer of paper or the like may be applied to the product in known manner.
