Dryer with a heat pump and an electrical heater and method for operating same

The dryer (1) has a process air duct (2) in communication with a drying chamber (3), and a fan (12) in the duct. A heat pump i.e. compressor type heat pump, has a heat source e.g. condenser (20), thermally coupled to the duct. An electrical heating element (11) i.e. positive temperature coefficient heating element, is in a direct vicinity of the source, where a distance between the element and the source is smaller than a distance between the element and an entry for the process air into the chamber, and a ratio between the distances amounts to between 1.5 and 20. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a dryer with a drying chamber for items to be dried.
