A microscope image pickup system includes: a light source (103); an object lens (108); a display device (153); a record device (167); a capture device (150, 152) for performing a preview mode in which an image of the test object (110) obtained by the object lens (108) is repeatedly captured and a plurality of captured images are continuously displayed on the display device (153), or an image record mode in which the image of the test object (110) is captured and the captured image is recorded on the record device (167); an illumination light amount control device (106) for controlling the amount of light of the illumination light (104); and a system control device (161) for controlling an operation of the illumination light amount control device (106) depending on the preview mode or the image record mode performed by the capture device (150, 152).
