A handheld device for aligning a lens with the eye of a patient. The device comprises means for capturing and storing an image of a patient wearing spectacles, and processing means for determining on the image the centre of a pupil of the patient, and indicating on a display the position of the lens over the eye of the patient wherein the optical centre of the lens is aligned with the pupil of the patient.
