PURPOSE: An authentication device and an authentication method are provided to maintain high authentication precision and reduce time for authentication. CONSTITUTION: A user registration database(6) registers authentication information representing a contrast object. The first authentication device performs authentication when the contrast object enters the first area. The second authentication device performs authentication when the contrast object authenticated in the first authentication device enters the second area. A person tracing device detects a contrast object which has possibility to receive authentication in the second authentication device existing in a detection area.
