PURPOSE: A solid-state image pickup device, a method for driving a solid-state image pickup device, and an image pickup apparatus are provided to prevent the generation of optical smudge at a peripheral part of valid pixel area by preparing dummy pixel area at border part of between the valid pixel area and optical black pixel area. CONSTITUTION: A vertical drive unit(12) skips pixel signals of pixel areas(113a,113b) of the vertical direction side of valid pixel area(111). The vertical drive unit performs the reading drive about the pixel signals of the optical black pixel areas(112a-112d) and valid pixel area. A horizontal drive unit(14) skips the pixel signals of pixel areas(113c,113d) of horizontal direction side of the valid pixel area among read pixels. The horizontal drive unit performs the read drive for the pixel signal of the optical black pixel area and valid pixel area.
