PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for detecting a reverse range of a manual transmission on a vehicle are provided to improve stability of a backward movement by controlling an engine by automatically detecting the selection of a reverse transmission terminal. CONSTITUTION: A tone wheel(10) Is mounted on a driving shaft of a vehicle. The preset number of missing teeth is formed. A tooth detector(20) detects the missing teeth and normal teeth according to the rotation of the tone wheel. A controller(30) determines the driving direction of the vehicle by counting the number of the teeth between missing teeth detected by the tooth detector.
