PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To aim at saving energy while maintaining an optimal illumination environment necessary for a person's activity and work in a room equipped a task illumination fixture and a base illumination fixture. SOLUTION: The illumination system is composed of a task illumination fixture 10 to secure a mainly horizontal face illuminance in a predetermined area, a base illumination fixture 20 to secure a mainly perpendicular face illuminance or a perpendicular brightness, a person detecting part 40 to detect an existence of a person and a direction of a face in the predetermined area, and a controlling part 30 to control lighting up the task illumination fixture 10 in accordance with the existence of the detected person by the person detecting part 40 and to control lighting up the base illumination fixture 20 in accordance with the direction of the face detected by the person detecting part 40.
