An aqueous suspension of alumina or silica hydroyd is mixed with not less than 5% by weight, based on the dry material, of a combustible, organic, surface active conditioning agent, having a flash point of not less than 100 DEG C., to form on said particles a combustible coating, which is partly hydrophilic and partly hydrophobic, to prevent subsequent adhesion of the particles, the mixture is dried at a temperature below the flash point of the conditioning agent to form compacted particles, and the compacted particles are then heated to 350 DEG -500 DEG C. to burn the coating, thereby providing particles which are readily dispersible in for example, paints, rubber, and lubricants. The aquagel is preferably salt free, and may be prepared by ion exchange or preferably electrodialysis. The surface active conditioning agent may be a substantially ashless water-soluble soap, and may have added thereto an organic combustible extending agent having a flash point not less than 100 DEG C., for example a lubricating oil. Examples employed as conditioning agents ammonium oleate, ricinoleate and laurate, triethanolamine laurate, sorbitan monolaurate, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate. Lubricating compositions comprise 10% of the solid disperses in 90% of 300 visc. S.V.S. 40 V.I. lubricating oil.
|
