<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress magnetization inversion of magnetic dots within adjacent tracks while enhancing recording density. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a magnetic storage medium including a magnetic recording layer provided with a plurality of recording tracks recording data and a backing layer disposed below the magnetic recording layer, the backing layer has a projecting and recessed pattern comprising projecting parts and recessed parts, the projecting parts of the projecting and recessed pattern are disposed below the respective recording tracks and the recessed parts of the projecting and recessed pattern are disposed below boundary regions of the adjacent recording tracks.
