PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a patterned medium type magnetic recording medium free from non-magnetization due to oxidation of a magnetic layer and after corrosion due to a residual fluorine compound. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of the patterned medium type magnetic recording medium includes a preparing step for preparing a magnetic recording medium intermediate comprising a magnetic layer and a first protective layer on the surface of a substrate, a projecting and recessed pattern forming step for partially removing the first protective layer and the magnetic layer of the magnetic recording medium intermediate using a mask having a prescribed pattern to form a projecting and recessed pattern, a second protective layer forming step for forming a second protective layer on the entire surface of the projecting and recessed pattern, a non-magnetic material packing step for packing a non-magnetic material in recessed parts of the projecting and recessed pattern and forming a non-magnetic material layer on the surface of projecting parts and a flattening step for removing the non-magnetic material layer of the surface of the projecting parts, the second protective layer and the mask to form the patterned medium type magnetic recording medium having a flat surface.
