PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a face authentication system hardly affected by a quantization error, while ensuring resistance against a noise component. SOLUTION: The system includes: an imaging means 1; a face detecting means 2; a normalization means 4 for cutting out an area corresponding to a face detected by the face detecting means 2, and for generating a normalized image normalized in conformity with a preset size and angle; a density gradient image generating means 5 for generating a density gradient image from the normalized image; a filter means 6 for computing an angle difference indicating a direction of a density gradient between an objective pixel and a peripheral pixel as to the all the pixels of the density gradient image; a mask processing means 7 for comparing difference results obtained by the filter means 6 as to all the pixels with a preset threshold, and for mask-processing the pixel with the difference results exceeding the threshold in the density gradient image; and an authentication means 8 for comparing an image obtained by the mask processing means, with a reference face image indicating the face of an authentication-objective person registered preliminarily, so as to authenticate the face.
