A METHOD FOR PREPARING ETHYLENE GLYCOL FROM POLYHYDROXY COMPOUND

Disclosed is a method for preparing ethylene glycol from polyhydroxy compound which include starch, hemicellulose, saccharose, dextrose, fructose and fruchosan. In the method, the polyhydroxy compound is used as raw material, the method is carried out at the presence of catalyst and the catalyst is the multi-metal catalyst which is composed of the two parts: the first part is selected at least one from the group consisting of Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt of transition metal, and the second part is selected at least one from the group consisting of Mo, W, its carbide, its nitride and its phosphide. The catalytic conversion is carried out under the following hydrothermal condition: the temperature is 120-300 °C and the pressure of hydrogen is 1-13MPa. Through the method of the present invention, the ethylene glycol can be prepared from polyhydroxy compound in high efficieccy, high selectivity and high yield.
