PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten processing time, since a user need not perform operation for designating an area where autofocus is preferentially performed for himself (herself). SOLUTION: The autofocus device includes: a face detection part 130 detecting a face area in a photographic image plane on the basis of image data generated by photographing a subject imaged by an imaging optical system; and an AF target area decision part 131 deciding whether or not the face area is within a preferential focusing area set in the photographic image plane, and deciding the face area as an AF target area in order to carry out focusing operation of the imaging optical system 10 when the face area is included in the preferential focusing area.
