<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which has higher accuracy in determining the state and is configured such that a process cartridge can be attached/detached to/from the apparatus body, wherein the attaching state of the process cartridge can be determined with simple constitution, in a short time, further. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is configured such that the process cartridge 2 including at least a photoreceptor drum 21 and a developing unit 2b is provided attachably/detachably to/from an image station, and includes a destaticizing LED 101, a light-emitting element 102 and a light-receiving element 103 prepared for detecting the residual amount of developer. The destaticizing LED 101 has an intrinsic light emission pattern, and the attaching state of the process cartridge 2 is determined based on the light received by the light-receiving element 103 and the intrinsic light emission pattern.
