PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alternative value for an air mass flow amount in an operation region of a supercharging type internal combustion engine where the accuracy of measuring the air mass flow amount using an air mass sensor is lower. SOLUTION: This method for providing characteristic variables for the state of a pneumatic system 3 for the supercharging type internal combustion engine 2 includes a step of using the sensor for measuring characteristic variable measure values as data for the characteristic variables, a step of providing a characteristic variable model which is used for calculating characteristic variable model values from one or more characteristic variable measured values for various variables, and a step of providing the characteristic variables in accordance with the characteristic variable measured values or the characteristic variable model values calculated using the characteristic variable model depending on the state of the pneumatic system 3.
