PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid ejecting apparatus which can prevent the stagnation and adhesion of a liquid and the settling of a color component of the liquid without installing a stirring means in a liquid containing part, and can prevent the idle striking motion at a head. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes liquid replenishing means (pumps P1 and P2) which reciprocally replenish the liquid via a communication passage 5 between a first liquid containing part (ink tank 2) and a second liquid containing part (ink cartridge 3) smaller in storable capacity for the liquid than the first liquid containing part and constituted to be attachable and detachable, a control means 11 which makes the liquid of one liquid containing part replenished to the other liquid containing part until the liquid reaches a predetermined amount smaller than the storable capacity for the liquid in the second liquid containing part, a detecting means (flow rate sensor Q) which detects a flow rate of the liquid in the communication passage, and a deciding means (ink residual amount deciding means 55) which decides the total amount of the liquid in each liquid containing part on the basis of an output of the detecting means.
