By bringing an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydrogen carbonate such as sodium hydrogen carbonate into contact with a cathode which is coated with a nickel-tin alloy, dissolvable nickel and tin contained in the coating layer are dissolved into the aqueous solution.  Consequently, the amounts of the metals dissolved during electrolysis are reduced.
