PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a server to be operated in power-saving modes at a low cost without losing convenience, as regards a technique for operating the server in power-saving modes.

SOLUTION: When a server 1 is placed in a sleep mode, a proxy device 2 generates a virtual IF having the same server IP address and server MAC address as the server and sets the alternative IP address and the alternative MAC address to the server 1 to place it into sleep mode. When a request addressed to the server 1 arrives from a client terminal, the proxy device 2 receives the request in place of the server 1 and restores the server 1 and transfers the request to the server 1 and causes the server 1 to directly return a response to the client terminal.
