<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a magnetic head in which a magneto-resistance effect element having lamination structure is arranged between a pair of upper and lower magnetic shield layers, with which an element shape being flat in the element width direction and in the height direction can be easily manufactured. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method includes: a width direction layer forming stage in which formation of layer structure in the width direction of the magneto-resistance effect element is performed until execution of flattening processing; a height direction layer forming stage in which formation of layer structure in the height direction of the magneto-resistance effect element is performed until execution of flattening processing; and a flattening processing stage in which after both of the width direction layer forming stage and the height direction layer forming stage are finished, a magneto-resistance effect film surface is exposed by flattening processing.
