<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve durability and operational reliability, in a torque converter 3 capable of varying transmission torque, by putting a frictional material 21 arranged on the outer peripheral side of one surface of a lockup clutch 8, in any of a separating unlocking state, a slidingly contacting state or a lock state of being brought into pressure contact so as not to slide, on a front wall inner surface of a casing 10 connected to a pump impeller 4. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A friction surface of the frictional material 21 is provided with a groove 23 for allowing a continuous oil flow to a lockup oil chamber 16 from a torque converter chamber 15 in a sliding contact state and cutting off the oil flow in a lock state.
