<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift position detection device for a shift-by-wire transmission system allowing achievement of a fail-safe function without an increase of the number of sensors to be used. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In this shift position detection device, the sensors 5 to 9 are arranged by being made to correspond to each position of a shift lever, and the shift position is detected by the sensors 5 to 9. The shift position detection device is constituted of a rotating body 12 rotating by interlocking with a shift operation of the shift lever, two kinds of signal generation means 3 and 4 arranged at different angle positions on the rotating body 12, the sensors 5 to 9 arranged oppositely to the rotating body 12 to output three values of H-M-L according to proximity/isolation of the two kinds of signal generation means 3 and 4, and a position detection circuit for deciding the shift position by the combinations of the three values of H-M-L outputted from each sensor 5 to 9.
