<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of automatically changing to an optimum aspect to a subject even if the subject is moving, and to provide a method of controlling the imaging apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: an imaging section for outputting an imaging region corresponding to an arbitrary range on an image pickup device 221 as an image data output region by photoelectrically converting a subject image; and an image processing circuit 257 for detecting the direction of motion of the subject.
