PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a third party from stealing paper money by attaching a special device around a shutter of a paper money slot of an automatic teller machine to interfere with opening/closing of the shutter. SOLUTION: The automatic teller machine is provided with: a paper money slot 2 which has the shutter 5 and accumulates dispensed paper money M; and a light receiving and emitting sensor 8 which detects a foreign matter on the shutter 5 of the paper money slot 2. The light receiving and emitting sensor 8 is provided inside the paper money slot 2. An opening/closing operation of the shutter 5 is checked and a foreign matter is detected by the light receiving and emitting sensor 8 before accumulating the dispensed paper money M in the paper money slot 2.
