<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such problems in the related art wherein, although the related art has an automatic deflection preventive mechanism pressing the handrail chain from the outside to the inside using a spring force and a detection device detecting the slackness of a chain, in which the former cannot detect whether or not a slack amount reaches a limit and the latter can detect a limit slack amount but cannot prevent vibrations caused by the slackness within the limit, for preventing the slackness of the handrail chain and a main chain driving the handrail chain and removal of the chains from sprockets caused by the vibrations to prevent falling down of passengers, in a passenger conveyor. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Levers pressing from the outside to the inside using the spring force are opposedly arranged to the handrail chain and the main chain driving the handrail chain, sandwiching the loop of a chain for every chain therebetween, and a distance detection means detecting a relative distance between the levers is provided.
