<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit capable of achieving a narrower frame width of a device while absorbing expansion and contraction of an optical sheet caused by a thermal factor without causing a deflection in the optical sheet, and to provide a display device. <P>SOLUTION: A backlight unit 4 includes: a thin sheet-like optical sheet 7 provided on a rear face side of a light-transmitting display panel 3 and having a square profile in planar view; a sheet holder 10 mounted on a periphery of the optical sheet 7; and a light source for irradiating the display panel 3 with light. On the periphery of the optical sheet 7, a plurality of notches C with a predetermined width are formed along the longitudinal direction of the periphery, and adjacent strip parts 7a and 7b formed by the notches C are folded alternately in different directions. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT</p> |
