<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve detecting capability while maintaining the production yield. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The detecting apparatus has a storage device to store detection setting on the detecting capability to be used when detecting defects on a storage medium. More concretely, the storage device stores the detection setting so as to set relatively higher detecting performance as the number of errors is larger and relatively lower detecting performance as the number of errors is smaller, according to the number of errors generated when applying the Viterbi decoding loaded in the storage device having a storage medium. The detecting apparatus applies Viterbi decoding to the storage medium to be detected and obtains the number of errors for each area divided on the storage medium. Furthermore, the detecting apparatus, in reference to the storage device using the obtained number of errors, obtains the detection setting stored according to the number of errors for each area, and also it applies the obtained detection setting to each area for detection.
