Vehicle-mounted image capture device, such as a camera, that identifies, evaluates and classifies image elements, such as road signs, and wirelessly transmits a signal indicative of the image element to a receiver that matches the signal to a memory-stored library symbol which is displayed on a screen. The image processor may detect road traffic signs such as maximum speed limit signs. A GPS module may allow the vehicle's instantaneous speed to be determined from satellite position data and this speed may be compared with the detected road speed limit and an optical and audible warning signal may be initiated if the speed limit is exceeded. The camera may have first-in first-out (FIFO) memory which stores video images over a time period and overwrites them continuously with new images. The camera may be mounted in a bi-partite housing and pivoted depending on the angle of inclination of the vehicle's windscreen. The display may be part of a mobile telephone hands-free kit. The processor may also detect pedestrians and act as a road safety device. |
