A siloxane containing at least one unit of the formula <FORM:0916561/IV(a)/1> wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon (saturated or unsaturated) or halohydrocarbon radical, R1 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical, R11 is an alkylene radical of at least 2 C atoms, R111 is H, a saturated hydrocarbon or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, n is an integer of at least 1 and a is 0 or 1, may be made either by reacting (1) a siloxane containing at least one unit of the formula <FORM:0916561/IV(a)/2> wherein X is halogen, and (2) a compound of the formula R111 (OR11)nOM, wherein M is an alkali metal, or where R1 is alkylene, by reacting (1) a siloxane containing at least one unit of the formula <FORM:0916561/IV(a)/3> and (2) a compound of the formula R111(OR11)n OB, wherein B is an alkenyl radical, in the presence of a platinum catalyst. In the latter reaction, where R111 is H, the OH group of the hydroxyether is converted to a triorganosiloxy group, e.g. by reaction with (CH3)3SiCl, prior to reaction in the addition process, and after the reaction, can be regenerated by hydrolysis. Both reactions can be effected at 50 DEG to 200 DEG C. and in organic solvent solutions. Instead of the starting siloxanes, the corresponding alkoxysilanes may be used in the above reactions, with subsequent hydrolysis and condensation to yield the desired siloxanes. The products may be copolymerized in known manner with conventional siloxanes. In examples (1) C4H9(OC3H6)11OCH=CH2 was reacted with <FORM:0916561/IV(a)/4> in butyl ether using Pt on g -Al2O3 as catalyst; (2) similarly Me(OCH2.CH2)17OCH=CH2 was reacted with a siloxane composed of (Me2SiO) and (H2SiO) units. (Me=methyl). Uses: as lubricants, mould release agents, hydraulic fluids, damping fluids and as emulsifying agents. Specifications 601,604, 616,256 and 651,712 are referred to.
