The internal combustion engine has a gear wheel (2) provided on a crankshaft (1). The gear wheel stands permanently in contact with a gear pinion placed on a shaft of a starter. A clutch (5) is arranged between the gear wheel and the crankshaft. The clutch is formed by a clutch element connected with the gear wheel. The clutch element engages guide elements (10a,10b) with a lug-shaped formation (8) in one of multiple grooves (12) which are provided on the circumference of the crankshaft. The guide elements lie under the action of the fixed and outlying clutch element.
