The inverter (1) has a control unit (4) for clocked control of a switching element (24') of a step-up chopper unit (2), and a 4-point half bridge module (7) including four parallel-connected half bridges (71-74) with bridge switching elements (70). Three of the half bridges (72-74) perform a function of inverter units (31'-33'). The other half bridge performs a circuit design based function of a free-wheeling diode (22') and the switching element of the chopper unit. An inverter unit (3) has a three-point half bridge module.
