An experimental facility 1 for irradiating materials in a reactor 2 is of cylindrical outline and adapted to be rotated by a vertical shaft 4 in an arcuate recess formed in the wall of the reactor tank. Other similar facilities may be provided as at 3a, 3b. As shown, the reactor is heavy-water moderated. The facility 1 comprises tanks 5, 6 containing heavy water and reservoirs 7, 8 containing light water acting as a thermal neutron absorber. The tanks 5, 6 have a test channel 9, 10 extending therethrough and as shown in Fig. 1 the channel 10 is in the position for irradiating the material whereas channel 9 is shielded from the reactor. The lower end of the facility is shielded by concrete plugs and water reservoirs (Figs. 2a, not shown) and the upper end, Fig. 2, is shielded by a water reservoir 21, a concrete plug 22 and a lead covered steel plate 23. The channels 9, 10 contain coolant fluid and are connected at their ends by conduits such as 26 to heat exchangers 25 in the plug 22. The exchangers 25 may be connected through conduits 27 and rotary joints 28 to fixed external heat exchangers (not shown) to further cool the fluid. In use, after the channel 10, for example, has been in the Fig. 1 position for a sufficient time the facility is rotated through 180 degrees and the channel 10 may then be left to cool before it is unloaded. Meanwhile, a further experiment may be begun with the channel 9 which is now in the radiation zone. A modified facility is described with reference to Fig. 6 in which a rotatable ring 51 has heavy water reservoirs 52, 53 separated by light water columns 54, 55. Test channels 66, 67 extend through the reservoirs 52, 53 and the ring 51 surrounds a fixed column having a heavy water compartment 56 and a light water compartment 57. |
